Antonello May 28, 2012

This weekend was very special. First of all, daddy was off work for 4 days. That means our whole family was together and nothing beats that! Our folks were in an extra-good mood after meeting Cesar, it gave them just the kick in the butt they needed. Then on Friday, they brought home our new foster bro’, Antonello! He comes from Spain and left the shelter 2 months ago cuz he was bullied by the other dogs. He went to live with a foster family but something happened there. Momma got a call and was asked to take him in because the foster family couldn’t handle him. He was supposedly very aggressive and attacked both humans and dogs. He suffered from separation anxiety and was impossible to housebreak. He was completely stressed out and had to be kept in a crate all day because otherwise he went wild. He was overprotective, territorial, and just about everything else that you can think of. “But in the right hands I think he could make an excellent dog”, the foster mom said. How about making you an excellent foster home? was my question, but I had to stop myself cuz I know she must have ment well. And it’s true in a way, of course he’s excellent in the right hands, all dogs are! I just wish people would strive to become those “right” hands instead of giving up and passing on the “problem” to someone else.

Anyway, Antonello is nothing they said he’d be. He was stressed out the first day but since then he’s just a mellow guy. He gets over-excited when it’s time to go for a walk, but then he walks perfectly on the lead. He’s got some weird association to putting on the collar, but that will all be over with soon. It’s the same with mealtime. He gets super excited but he eats calmly. At least now he does. But they’re working on it! It’s obvious that Antonello was allowed to take a position he had no business having, meaning he was dominant when he should have been submissive. He couldn’t handle the pressure so he lashed out. Here he fit right into the pack with one exception: Alfie.

See, Alfie is the kind of guy who wants to eliminate imbalance. If you’re scared he’ll wanna set you straight! Anything to make the pack run smoothly. Well, here’s the thing. The pack doesn’t belong to Alfie, it belongs to mom & dad. It’s not Alfie’s job to run it, it’s theirs. It’s fine if we correct each other if someone’s disrespectful, but we’re not allowed to make the rules and play boss. Alfie immediately sensed that Antonello is unsure of him. He hid and crouched and that was unacceptable behavior to Alfie, sorta like “quit it or it’s gonna hurt!”. Mom & dad had to keep a close eye on Alfie, but with time Antonello felt more comfortable, and in the end he wouldn’t back down when Alfie ran over to correct him. It was always when Anton was told to do something and he didn’t obey immediately. Then Alfie was there in a heartbeat to make sure he did. What’s going on right now is they’re sending Alfie to the back of the pack mentally, so he knows not to try to run it. At the same time Antonello is given rules, boundaries and limitations so that he feels secure but learns not to create imbalance by provoking Alfie. Antonello only feels strong enough to do something stupid when he’s close to a human, so he needs know they’re not a source for imbalance anymore. Alfie doesn’t think he needs a human for anything, so he has to know he needs one for everything! It’s a challenging but oh, so satisfying task! Thank heavens for foster dogs :) .

Today is our first day in the apartment with Antonello and he doesn’t quite get the concept. In the beginning he was looking for the patio door, only to find out we don’t have those on the 10th floor. At least not in this building. Then he got a little stressed out and peed inside twice, but other than that he’s not had any accidents since the first day, when he was even more stressed out! It didn’t take long for him to relax, though, and now he’s back to his old mellow self. He’ll be fine, you’ll see. He was just misunderstood, but that’s all in the past. I’m confident we’ll find this great guy a good home soon, when he’s ready. I just know it.

Welcome.

Now, is this guy cool or what?!

We’re playing hide-and-seek….or something like that.

Shoot, they found me…

Momma’s writing a letter to Cesar.

Don’t forget to mention me!

Nothing new here…

Yoshi takes a nap.

I’m submissive… And take a long good look cuz you won’t be seeing this that often!

A self-entertainer.

Huh?

Scooby is so graceful.

Mr Troublemaker.

Addy found a good spot.

Peek-A-Boo I see you!

Wrestling.

She’s a beauty, my sister.

Sleepyhead.

In the shade.

Still nothing…

He never misses a thing, that big one in the back.

I do NOT look like that!!

It was a really hot day…

Sharing is love.

Mafaldah’s signature look; indifference.

Yo, where’d everybody go?

Yeah, that’s better.

Scooby enjoys his new life, which includes a yard.

Oooh, and you know what else? Our folks cleaned out the porch and made it into a neat place to hang! It’s gonna be Alfie’s bedroom but during the day it’s for all of us.

Neat, huh?

Mafaldah thinks so!

Mom & dad met Cesar Millan May 26, 2012

It’s true, they did!!! Read (almost) all about it on her blog, www.packwise.wordpress.com. Amazing, isn’t it! Go Cesar!

Remember I said I have a big revelation to make? Well, here it goes…

WE’RE MOVING!!!

I know, isn’t it great?! We just bought a house!

We’ve moved from our old “weekend-house” to a new one much closer to the city. In a month we’ll also be leaving the apartment, which honestly feels kinda great. I’m sick of elevators that never work, walks I cannot handle because the pavement’s hurting my joints, and most definitely, I’m so sick of people giving us a hard time for being different. Although we already had plans on moving to a house in the future, our neighbors kinda hurried up the process a little. Or a lot. Some of them just can’t stand that our family looks different from the rest, and it bothers them that we dare to do our own thing. Suddenly every sound, every smell and every strand of hair comes from us. For 5 years we never had a problem but now they’ve had enough. They just can’t take it! There are plenty of dogs in the building but the number of us is simply too much to swallow. Some people have a hard time coping with what they don’t understand.

When momma caught a neighbor trying to provoke Alfie to bark and become a nuisance so they could file a complaint, she had enough. When she was pushed out of the elevator by another neighbor because she wouldn’t ride with her “filthy family” (that’s us), dad was fed up. Next thing you know we’re moving!

The thing is, had my folks lived by themselves they never would’ve accepted the situation. But since some of our neighbors are pretty messed up, they’re afraid they might hurt us dogs. Let’s just say it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they came home and found us poisoned one day… They’re not prepared to risk our lives to have the last word, and we’re thankful that they realize it’s not worth it. Rest assured karma will deal with them sooner or later. It’s just sad that a handful of people can ruin it for so many others. Lots of good folks are coming up to us to express their anger over what’s happening. It’s nice to know we have a fan club, too :) .

Now back to the good stuff! Our house is right by the forest and we have a big fenced-in yard to hang around in. There are lots of great places to walk and the forest is really neat! We can smell all the wildlife, that’s for sure! But best of all, mom and dad are happy. They finally feel at ease. Who knows, our new neighbors might not approve of our motley crew either, but at least we own our house and land this time! But they do seem nice… I mean, we’re not stupid, of course people react! It’s not every day you come across a couple with 9 dogs, and for some reason not everybody enjoys the canine kind (not that I get that, but hey, who am I to judge?). All we ask is to be left alone. We respect other people, so will ya do us a favor and return that respect? Be fair!

Meanwhile, we’re busy getting everything together. Last weekend they got the fence in place, and here’s what we think of our new yard:

Someone say “play”?

Come here, you!

Oooh, right in the face!

Charge!

Jeez!

Look at that face… Priceless!

Slowing down, are ya?

I give up!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can see you brush :) .
All the commotion is making me dizzy…
Ev’s not one to make a fuss.
Can we go home now?
Finally some leg room – YEAH!!!
Daysee needs a moment to take it all in… So much space!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~¨

Yoshi’s looking for something to do…

Ah! Have a drink of saliva, why don’t you! The Big Guy doesn’t seem to mind :) .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mafaldah’s on the go.
That’s a doggone catfight!
Can’t touch this! * doing the dance *
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now here’s what I thought of it:

* imagine the chorus of Limp Bizkit’s Rollin’ *

I approve.

Thanks to the fact that Mafaldah threw up a disgusting spaghetti-like worm on the couch the other day, we all had to be dewormed. Seeing as we’re quite the bunch, mom had to empty out the stash of 2 different pharmacies, but we were still short! Since great precautions are taken to ensure I don’t eat gross stuff outside, I got to skip it this time :) . I ate my food with good appetite, while the rest of the pack had yellow paste shoved down their throats. Some of them were coaxed with turkey while a few had it blended with their dinner, it all came down to how much of a picky eater they are. The funny thing is I’m probably the only one who would’ve eaten the yucky stuff without thinking twice about it! That’s irony for you ;) .

The pharmacists looked confused…

Tram ride! May 22, 2012

For his last walk of the day, Alfie got to go with mom to Slottsskogen. Grandma, Atlas and Ricki went along, too. You know what they say about more being merrier! Anyhoo, they took the tram there. Alfie hasn’t gone on the tram in ages! He was amazed by the motion but sat nicely, looking out of the windows. He went bananas over the first dog they met in the park, though. In his case that means he gets up on two legs and starts panting. He doesn’t bark and he no longer tries to pull mom along with him, he’s more like an untamed horse. He did that once and then he was done with it. After he was told where the line goes he didn’t go for it again. They passed plenty of dogs and all three of them (Alfie, Atlas & Ricki) did really well.

When they got home mom was pretty beat (it was the same day she’d been away with Scooby & Daysee). She still had one more walk to do, though, but luckily it was my turn (and Evian, Adela, Scooby and Daysee, but who’s counting?). I’m not much of a hassle, I tend to go easy on her these days. You gotta be nice to your mommy sometimes, right?

Taking the tram – yay! (Hey, check out Hannibal Lecter in the back, hehe ;) )

Let’s see… Open sesame!

Ha! It worked!

Look, we’re moving! How amazing!

When plans go wrong May 22, 2012

Scooby and Daysee Mae walked all the way to Askim today – and back! It takes about 45 minutes one way! I swear, I don’t know how these pups do it, I can’t even remember the last time my old legs managed to take me that far… Anyway, today was hotter than hell. 27 degrees Celsius in May in Sweden? Something’s not right with that picture. People were happy, though. They threw their clothes and headed for the beach. You see, as soon as we’re on the plus side, weather-wise, I mean, things get a little crazy around here. A long hard winter can do that to people, you know. It’s like they have to do everything in their power to squeeze out the last of the sun before it’s gone again, and we don’t see it for another 8-10 months. Momma thought she’d do the same. She grabbed the only 2 dogs in the house who’d go along for such shenanigans, at least with smile on their faces. Coming from Spain must help, I think. Being slender and tireless, too. Scooby and Daysee are all those things and besides, they’ve never been to Askim before. And they’ve hardly ever seen the sun in this country! So off they went.

However, Mother Nature is never mistaking. Sweden is not supposed to be a hot-spot. They should’ve known something was up.

When they were half-way there they started noticing the gigantic dark clouds, and they were coming closer by the minute. Since mom is one hardheaded gal, she refused to turn back. Scooby and Daysee were actually panting, and you may not know it, but that says a lot! It was definitely hot outside. They kept going and eventually reached the beach. To cool off, the three of them went into the water. Daysee jumped around and tried swimming a little, but Scooby was fine with just resting. The plan was that they’d dry up on the way home. Well, the thunderstorm wasn’t exactly part of the plan, yet it managed to compromise things just a wee bit… Just as they sat down to dry a little, it started to rain. And rain. And RAIN. There was thunder and lightning, too, and lots of it! Needless to say, the pups wanted out. Or should I say in? All they could do was turn back and go home.

Lesson of the day: Mom may be hardheaded but Mother Nature’s even worse.

Here at last :) .

There they are, in Askim. See the clouds?

I can’t believe he’s actually panting! Must be hot.

There’s a good boy!

Such a nice day…

Ahh, that’s cool.

Dang, it’s cold!

And then it happened. Everyone was gone in a second.

Damn you, Mother Nature!

Oh yeah? Watch this!

Staying active May 13, 2012

We’re staying in the city this weekend cuz mom & dad have stuff to do, but little did we know that some of that stuff included us! They were gone a few hours during the afternoon, but showed up only to grab Alfie, Scooby and Daysee Mae and head out again! They went to Slottsskogen, a park in the middle of the city, and today was Göteborgsvarvet, a famous marathon running through Gothenburg. There were people and dogs everywhere! Alfie did really well; he was excited by all the commotion, but he still handled himself nicely. He didn’t mind the dogs in the park while walking around – the thing with him is that if you stay in the same place for a while, he becomes territorial after only a few minutes. They tried doing that and after about 5 minutes he guarded against a man and his dog when they came too close. It’s a natural behavior for this type of dog, but it didn’t help that it was a blind man and his therapy dog… Or maybe it did; it might have been worse if the man had reacted in another way than he did; with surprise instead of anticipation of the worst (which lots of people do when they see Alfie). Dad was impressed with how well mom handles Alfie. He hasn’t seen her walk him for a long time since he’s always doing it before he goes to work. Mom and Alfie go for long walks every day and it has really paid off. They’ve come to know each other on a deeper level and are very comfortable together. Scooby and Daysee only had eyes for the crowd – it was their first time in such an extreme environment. Scooby soon relaxed though, but Daysee was all about exploring every inch of the place! I’d share more photos of them but unfortunately most of them are blurry cuz they wouldn’t stop moving!

It began really well on mom’s part, though. She took a step on what she thought was dried mud, but it turns out it was very much wet – and deep! Good thing those shoes are washable (and that it was mud and not s**t)…

Group photo!

Sharing an ice cream :) .

Ice cream for all!

Tough on the outside, a momma’s boy on the inside ;) .

Smile for the camera, baby!

Where’d the blind man go? Or more importantly, his dog?

Oooh, seals!

Scooby prefers looking at the crowd.

The attraction.

DID YOU SEE THAT?!?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When they came back from their little adventure, it was time for ours! Evian, Adela, Yoshi, Legolas, Mafaldah and I got to go for some easy-breezy fun at the beach in Askim! Unfortunately our time was cut a little short cuz we got a flat tire and had to meet up with the assistance guy. It was a bit of an inconvenience but it didn’t stop us from having a good time in the sand! Mafaldah and I were the only ones wearing a leash, but that’s okay, I like being close to dad anyway :) . Since I tend to eat inappropriate things and the beach is full of them, and Mafaldah needs more training before she can be fully trusted, we had no choice but to accept the circumstances. Mafah probably had a bigger problem with it than I did; these days I actually enjoy boundaries, while she’s still young and crazy and wants to party all night long. These kids today…
No longer a youngster, but still a striking looking fellow, if I may say so myself :) .
It’s hard to believe that head belongs to that body, but that’s why we love ya, Mafah!
Believe it or not, but Ev went WILD on the beach! Was it the salty air, the feeling of wet sand or the sea itself, we’ll never know, but something finally got this old geezer moving!!
This one was all over the place! By the way, don’t let the harness fool you; he’s no fan of swimming, thus a pretty bad excuse of a lifeguard…
The sheer horror in Adela’s eyes stems from her pure hate of getting her precious paws wet. It’s always something with her, isn’t it? Next thing you know she’ll want her breakfast in bed, too!
Yoshi is amazing, he really is. At his size you’d think his batteries run out before ours, but no siree! Apparently his batteries are more powerful than ours together! This little rascal will walk almost any distance without so much as a look of “pick-me-up-pleaaase”. Although sitting like a parrot on mom’s shoulder is a lot of fun, he admits.
Yep, today was a good day.
Summer, hurry up! May 4, 2012
I don’t know about you, but I love the spring. It’s just that April was colder than usual over here, so now I’m thinking let’s skip the spring and go straight to the summer!! Momma says if that happens it’s nothing to be happy about. Apparently the seasons are already fading into one long state of in-between and it’s not easy to tell what season it is anymore, at least where we live. Summer time is usually hard for me to handle cuz us bulldogs aren’t exactly equipped for extreme weather of any kind, really. But I’m sick of being cold and I wanna go swimming! Okay, so I can’t swim (another bulldog downside, I’m afraid) but I can splash around! So, I sent the girls to keep a look-out:
Summer, where are you?
Well, it ain’t back here! Keep looking!
Wake me up when it’s here already.
Yeah, like they care…
At least our rhubarb came to life again!
And the trees have started to bloom…
Okay, so maybe summer is on its way after all…
